Sideawalk maintenance & ramps

Our first project was installing 1:10 ramps to correct gaps and height differences between sidewalks in the main garden, including ‘minor’ gaps. We intend to have the sidewalks repaired between and at our other gardens before we offer programming outside of the main garden.

Paths & Garden Access

Our largest project to date was installing a 4-foot-wide compressed limestone path through the garden with 1-foot unplanted buffers on either side. More paths will be added as we have funding to do so, including completely filling in our main sitting area to ensure everyone can comfortably navigate both teaching and learning spaces.

Mobile Garden Devices & Tools

We currently have two “garden kneelers,” soft knee pads with two sturdy metal assist bars. When funds are available, we will also have two garden scooters.

Giitigan will use traditional bone and wood tools whenever possible, so we are working on developing tools that work with as many bodies as possible. Please contact us if you have suggestions!

We will have planting/gardening tables n our future greenhouse and will also have outdoor planting tables when funds allow.

Outdoor planting tables are designed to be comfortably used with a majority of assistive devices; the space on a planting table is as productive or more so than an average square raised garden bed.

Sensory information: Sound, Light, & Smell

The main garden is located on a fairly quiet street, but there are occasionally vehicles that pass by at various levels of noise and there is a low background sound from the Interstate. Our other garden spaces are even quieter and are sheltered from noise by vegetation.

The main garden is fairly bright from morning until late afternoon. One of our plots still in planning is well-shaded throughout the day and has shaded street parking.

There are flowering plants at the main garden at medium-to-low fragrance levels. Our other plots will be working and forest gardens with fewer flowers.
