Giitigan is a 501c3, publicly-supported and tax exempt, nonprofit!

We are delighted to announce that Giitigan was just recognized as a tax-exempt public charity by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)! 501c3 exemption will allow us to partner with even more organizations and continue to expand our gardens and programs.

Donors: Our effective date of exemption is backdated to July 23rd, 2019. If your total annual contributions to Giitigan exceeded $250 or more in cash, payment, or property in 2019, 2020, and forwards, you will be receiving a donation receipt in the next 2 weeks. If you do not receive one or would otherwise like a receipt, please contact us! Chi miigwech // thank you so much to all of our donors and volunteers. This would not have been possible without you!

Giitigan's Response to COVID-19

In order to help keep our community safe and in light of the extended ‘Stay Home, Stay Safe’ order, we have made the difficult decision to continue to cancel events. All events and volunteer opportunities are cancelled for the forseeable future.

Giitigan’s leaders and their immediate family continue to tend the gardens. To be careful, Giitigan will be closed while gardeners are present. Otherwise, the garden (537 Clifford Street) is open from dawn to dusk.

If you decide to visit us, please follow the CDC and the State of Michigan’s social distancing guidelines.

For your safety, we ask that you:

  • Not exceed ten (10) people in the garden at any time.

  • Remain at least six (6) feet away from other visitors at all times.

  • Wear a cloth face cover (mask, bandana, etc) that completely covers your nose and mouth.

  • Help your children and pet(s) follow social distancing.

We hope Giitigan will continue to be a space of learning, healing, and reclamation for the Native community of Nkwejong.
